Our parks, allotments and green open spaces are amazing places for communities to come together – whether it’s a family fun day, a picnic in the park, a growing session, or even a fitness session. We love seeing our green spaces buzzing with activity!

Want to Run an Event in a Birmingham Park?

Before you go ahead, you’ll need to get permission from Birmingham Council; this isn’t about the Council putting up barriers but is about making sure your event is safe, works well in the space, and is enjoyable for everyone.

Please note, that basic grounds maintenance and conservation work, the type of thing which many volunteer groups do regularly on site, does not need separate permission, subject to your group having sufficient insurance in place.

Why Do I Need Permission?

Good question! Asking for permission makes sure that:

  • The green open space and its facilities stay in good shape for everyone.
  • People, pets and wildlife are kept safe.
  • Your event doesn’t clash with something else happening in the same space.
  • You get the right advice on things like insurance, licences, or safety checks.

How Do I Apply?

Right now, the Parks Service is undergoing a restructure so there is a temporary system in place to manage requests for events. This may change in the future but as soon as there’s an update, we’ll make sure you hear about it. In the meantime, here’s what you currently need to do:

For smaller events

Smaller events are considered to be ones that:

  • Last less than a day.
  • Do not require power or structures.
  • Do not provide food.
  • Are expected to attract less than 300

For these events, organisers are required to send the relevant District Park Manager an email which includes the details of the organiser, the event taking place, confirmation of insurance and a stipulation that a risk assessment will take place prior to the event.

For larger events

Bigger events are considered to be ones that:

  • Will last longer than a day.
  • Will require power and structures
  • Will provide food

For these events, a Use of Parks form should be submitted directly to the Council using the link below but at least 12 weeks before your event date. You may also be required to provide details regarding insurance, risk assessments, and any licences you have had to obtain e.g. if you’re selling food or drink, providing music, etc.

Do I need permission for a small gathering, like a picnic or birthday party?
If it’s just a few friends or family and you’re not setting up equipment or charging
people, you don’t usually need to apply.

Does it cost money to apply?
Sometimes. The council may charge depending on the size and type of event.

Can BOSF help with my application?
Absolutely! We can’t give you permission ourselves, but we can support you with
advice, contacts, and examples from other community groups.

How much notice should I give?
The earlier the better! Aim for at least – 2 weeks before your event, especially for
larger activities.

What if I want to sell food, drink, or alcohol?
You’ll need the right licences in place.
