Statistics on Obesity Physical Activity and Diet
The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has released a report collating the latest statistics on obesity, physical activity and diet for England. The main sources for physical activity statistics are the Active People Survey (APS) for adults and the Health Survey for England (HSE) 2012 for children.
Key findings:
- 36% of adults played sport at least once a week with 18% taking part on three or more occasions.
- 57% did not play any sport in the 28 days prior to being surveyed.
- The proportion of boys (aged 5-15 years) who met the physical activity guidelines fell from 28% in 2008 to 21% in 2012.
- The proportion of girls (aged 5-15 years) who met the physical activity guidelines fell from 19% in 2008 to 16% in 2012.
