• BOSF Job Advertisement: Volunteer Development Officer

    We have an exciting new opportunity for someone to join our team.

    We know that access to green space is inequitable for our population, yet the potential it has to impact on health and wellbeing is huge. This role focuses on supporting volunteering in areas of Birmingham with less social capital.

    Reporting to: Operations Manager

    Location: Birmingham area – home working

    Salary: £24,351 (FTE) (subject to review)

    Hours: 18 hours per week (flexible) but including every Monday

    Annual Leave: 17 days p.a. with a standard day being 7.5 hours

    Duration: 12 months (may be extended subject to funding)

    Who are we looking for? 

    The appointee will:

    • Have the ability to understand and motivate a diverse range of community participants and partners to participate in volunteering in green spaces – including helping to redefine what volunteering means for different communities.   
    • Have an understanding of, and commitment to, community development.
    • Have knowledge of issues affecting communities in areas of deprivation.
    • Be someone who actively seeks solutions to problems; is self-motivated and able to work flexibly. 
    • Have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of people including volunteers, trustees, funders and partners.
    • Be able to work very effectively under pressure, meet tight deadlines, prioritise and pay attention to detail.
    • Have the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team taking a full and active part in the life of BOSF.
    • Have project planning and implementation experience.
    • Be able to use core ICT packages including Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
    • Have the ability to travel for the attendance of meetings, events & conferences.
    • Have a commitment to & appreciation of relevant Health & Safety issues
    • Have a commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in all work practices, employment and partnering opportunities.
    • Have a flexible approach including remote working and ability to travel and work out of office hours including occasional evenings and weekend.
    • Be willing to travel and work principally in areas designated as having little environmental justice, specifically, the Bordesley and Highgate area of Birmingham.  The successful applicant will also be required to work in other parts of south Birmingham. 
    • Be willing and able to lead walks in order to encourage interest in parks, open spaces, and good health. 
    • Be able to work very effectively under pressure, meet tight deadlines, prioritise and pay excellent attention to detail.

    What are the main duties? 

    • Increasing the number and diversity of volunteers and volunteer groups.
    • To establish good links with Parks & Open Space Community Groups, Birmingham City Council departments and all other interested agencies.
    • To attend committee and Trustee meetings where appropriate and give regular reports on current progress.
    • To raise the profile of BOSF locally in line with the aims and objectives and consider new ways to expand the forum’s activities.
    • To manage budgets for the project, including financial monitoring and the recording of qualitative and quantitative performance measures and outputs and to communicate such information as appropriate.
    • To help secure funding in support of the work undertaken through grant applications to outside bodies, income generation and sponsorship where appropriate.
    • To produce interim/final reports on work undertaken and future plans, to provide feedback to funders and other partners
    • To carry out other activities as reasonably requested to help further BOSF aims and objectives.
