Waterside Care with Friends of Kings Norton Park

Kings Norton Park lies in the shadow of Saint Nicolas’ church in south Birmingham. This beautiful park is divided by a main road with the ornamental area, skate-park and play area to the west and the recreation ground to the east. A river, a brook and a canal feeder pass through the park. The Worcester & Birmingham canal borders the playing fields near where it joins the North Stratford canal at Kings Norton junction so the site is criss-crossed by waterways.
The active and enthusiastic friends of Kings Norton Park meet every week to help keep the park looking at its best all year round. They have created a wildflower meadow alongside the river with support from Birmingham City Council Rangers and have plans to develop a wetland area in future.
Since joining forces with WatersideCare, Friends of Kings Norton Park have added a few strings to their bow. Now, the volunteers are regularly testing the water quality of the river, brook and canal feeder as well as surveying for aquatic invertebrates. Recently Friends of Kings Norton Park hosted a Keep Britain Tidy event. The Big Tidy Up brought together local school children, teachers, and staff from Waitrose as well as special guests, The Wombles.
This project is part of the Nature Improvement Area (NIA) work with the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust in partnership with Natural England and is part of a network of projects to improve our habitats across Birmingham and the Black Country.
